Josephine Baker - Blue Skies - 1927 - Irving Berlin

Josephine recorded her version in 1927. Josephine Baker (June 3, 1906 -- April 12, 1975) was an American dancer, singer, and actress who found fame in her adopted homeland of France. Nicknamed the "Bronze Venus," the "Black Pearl," and even the "Créole Goddess" in anglophone nations. "Blue Skies" is a popular song, written by Irving Berlin in 1926. The song was composed in 1926 as a last minute addition to the Rodgers and Hart musical, Betsy. Although the show only ran for 39 performances, "Blue Skies" was an instant success, with audiences on opening night demanding 24 encores of the piece from star, Belle Baker. In 1927, the music was published and Ben Selvin's recorded version was a #1 hit. That same year, it became one of the first songs to be featured in a talkie, when Al Jolson performed it in The Jazz Singer. 1946 was also a notable year for the song, with a Bing Crosby/Fred Astaire film taking its title, and two recorded versions by Count Basie and Benny Goodman reaching #8 and #9 on the pop charts, respectively. Crossing genres, Willie Nelson's recording of "Blue Skies" was a #1 country music hit in 1978. It was a major western swing and country standard already in 1939, by Moon Mullican, and in 1962 by Jim Reeves. "Blue Skies" is one of many popular songs whose lyrics use a "Bluebird of happiness" as a symbol of cheer: "Bluebirds singing a song -- Nothing but bluebirds all day long." Irving Berlin, Lena Horne"What'll I do" performed by Steve Bone.Day 296 of the JSC.

"What'll I Do" is the name of a song written by Irving Berlin in 1923. It was introduced by singers Grace Moore and John Steel late in the run of Berlin's third Music Box Revue and also was included in the following year's (1924) edition. In the lyrics, the singer questions how he or she will get by now that a recent romance has ended. The song was used as a generalized theme in Nelson Riddle's Academy award-winning period score for the 1974 film The Great Gatsby starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. It was sung by Mary Steenburgen in the 1991 movie The Butcher's Wife and was used as the theme tune to the 1990s British sitcom Birds of a Feather. An instrumental version of the song was used under the closing scene of the fifth season (1986-87) episode of the sitcom Cheers titled I Do and Adieu. "What'll I Do" is a popular standard and has been recorded by many artists. Following is a partial list of artists who have recorded versions (in alphabetical order): Acoustix, a modern Barbershop Quartet Art Garfunkel, on his album Some Enchanted Evening Bea Arthur, on the 1992 Golden Girls episode "Journey to the Center of Attention" Chet Baker, Pat Boone Cher, on the album Dark Lady Chris Botti, from his album When I Fall in Love with vocals by Paula Cole. CHEEK TO CHEEK [© by Irving Berlin] | whistled and sung by André Berlin

Honors for this video (3) #54 - Most Discussed (Today)) - Germany #9 - Most Discussed (Today)) - Music - Germany #97 - Top Rated (Today)) - Music - Germany My favorite american songwriter, that is Irving Berlin. I just love his work of more than 1000 songs. It´s the first time I tried to sing "Cheek to cheek", after "White christmas" and "Puttin´ on the Ritz", as "Cheek to cheek" is quite high and I had to wait for good day to give it a try. I´ve put a filter on it, to give it a genuine sound of the 1930´s.The instrumental part in the backing track was quite long and so I obviously began to hum. I wasn´t even aware of it. I´ve made 5 versions. Sometimes the singing was great and the whistling a mess. And singing after an orgy of whistling high notes, was difficult I found out. I had one perfect version, but I was whistling directly into the microphone, which didn´t forgive me my unprofessional behaviour. Sounded like I was trying a comical opera in a washing machine. Lol. So here we go. Back to the 30´s. A big step in time, from "Paparazzi" 2009 to "Cheek to cheek" 1935, but a small step in notes. The song was first performed by Fred Astaire in the movie "Top Hat" (1935). Hope you like it. Cheerio André Berlin PS. Oh yes, I wish Irving Berlin was my grand grand uncle, but we share the same family name by coincidence.
